The Contracts & Conflicts Committee assists freelancers with any questions specifically related to publishing contracts. In today's world, it is imperative that freelancers utilize written contracts with their clients. The committee strives to answer questions and provide information that will help ASJA members and non-members alike to make informed choices about their agreements with editors and publishers. These efforts stop short of negotiating with publishers on behalf of our members, however. Doing so would create potential legal liability and would fundamentally change the relationship between ASJA and our members.
The process of formalizing a contract often can provide freelancers with the impetus they need to ask questions prior to entering a business relationship with a client. ASJA promotes freelancing as a business and we emphasize good business practices at every stage of contract negotiations.
ASJA provides a host of educational resources and networking opportunities for independent writers to become well-versed in working with clients of all sizes. It is through those opportunities that ASJA members learn the traits of good clients and publishers who value the work that we do and who treat us well.
